Happy Valentines Day! from The Savvy Sistah

Health & Wellness: Sweating in the Spirit 2

I have decided this year that I am going to start taking better care of my health. I have never been one to exercise, but now as I see myself getting older I really see the importance of a healthy lifestyle and that includes a balanced diet and exercise.
Today my mother let me see her new workout video by one of the nations leader fitness experst Donna Richardson Joyner and I love this video. It's called "Sweating in the Spirit 2" and it not only has simple routines but some great music. She has a live band and a few musical selections by gospel artist, Byron Cage, RiZen and Martha Munizzi. So if you want to join me as I embark on this new mission make sure you pick up this video.

Take a look at Byron Cage's performance in the video.

Savvy Cooking: Three Berry Salad & Smoothie

I love fruit and this year I'm really getting focused on wellness and I want to pass on a great fruit salad that will improve your body inside and out. The "Three Berry Salad" consists of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. They are known as the "Super Food" because they are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber. They are also rich in antioxidants which help to protect the cells in your body from damage and helps to prevent disease and aging. (and it's cheaper than botox) So just cut up the strawberries and add the raspberries and blueberries and you'll have a sweet and nutritional snack. For you ladies who are always on the go and don't have time for breakfast I recommend the "Three Berry Smoothie". My mother started make smoothies for our family a few years ago and now I never have to go to Jamba Juice. (I still love that place, shh don't tell her). So Enjoy your fruit salad and smoothie and have a "Berry" good day!
Three Berry Fruit Smoothie Recipe:
1 cup "the three berry's
1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup non-fat yogurt
1 banana

Video Archive: Mary J. Blige "Not Gon Cry"

MARY J BLIGE - Not gon cry

I really enjoyed watching the BET honors, and after hearing Monica sing "Not Gon Cry", to Mary I had to go to the "Video Archive" to find this song. Waiting to Exhale is one of my favorite movies and the soundtrack has got to be the best of all times.(Babyface is a genius). So if you were a fan of this song like me,this video is for you.

Savvy Sistah: Jennifer Hudson

I don't care to much for the Grammy Awards, however I was looking forward to seeing Jennifer Hudson. She sang the ballad "You Pulled Me Through" and you could feel every word she was singing. At the end of the song, I think I had more tears in my eyes than she did. She accepted the Grammy for the Best R & B album wearing a black, white and silver cocktail dress with a fan-shaped neckline. When she accepted her award she thanked her family in heaven and those who are with her today. She is such a class act and I look for this to be her best year yet.

Here is a video of Jennifer accepting her award and performance for those of you who missed it.

Savvy Sistah: Madame CJ Walker

One of my favorite Savvy Sistahs of all time is Madame CJ Walker. When I was a young girl I would make my own skincare products and I never thought, that eventually I would manufacture my own bath & body line. I owe a lot of credit to this woman born Sarah Breedlove who lost both of her parents (they were former slaves) when she was just six years old. Because of her inventions and the fact that she was a savvy businesswoman, she eventually became the first female millionaire in the United States. She had a passion and desire to help women solve their skin & hair problems and to also help them create their own stream of income. Today I celebrate this brave Savvy Sistah for her legacy and for paving the way for me and other entrepreneurs.

Savvy Cooking: Edamame

Edamame is one of my favorite foods to snack on. I like it because it's quick and easy to eat and I can't forget that they are actually good for you.(Soy beans contain protein and high levels of vitamin A,vitamin B and calcium) Edamame are soybeans in a pod and they are native to Japan, China and Korea. The first time I ate these delicious soy beans was about 9 years ago in Japan. Since Asian food is one of my favorites, if I'm not at a Japanese restaurant eating them I usually just by a bag and cook them myself.

This is how I cook edamame.
1. Bring a pot of water to a boil and add a little salt. (you can also steam them)
2. Frozen soybeans need to boil about 7- 8 minutes, fresh or thawed about 5 minutes.
3. Strain the water, place soy beans in a boil and add a little sea salt for flavor.

That's it! A quick snack that's healthy for you and your children may like them too.
You can buy edamame at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Walmart and Meijers for less than $3.00 for a 16oz bag.
